Woolworths Theatre
The brief was to design a theatre in a town in the Welsh valleys. Woolworths was a british institution, everyone has fond memories of saturday morning visits for pic and mix sweets. The idea was to create a house for culture using the bones of Woolworths. The programs of the theatre are treated as volumes that sit within the gutted existing building. This creates a courtyard within the building where all the processes of creating a show can be seen by the public, the workshop, backstage and the rehersals. This engages the public with the art of creating a show. The volumes are wrapped containers that play with ideas of transparency and solidness.
